Bring Your Emotions Under Control
Lesson 3
Chapter 1 - Lesson 3: "Natural Versus Supernatural"
I. Natural Emotions Are Real, but They Should Not Rule the Believer
It is natural to feel hurt, rejected, or offended when others mistreat us.
While these emotions are normal, Christians are not called to live under the control of natural feelings.
Through Christ, believers can bring their emotions under His spiritual authority.
Scriptures
Romans 8:5-6 – "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit... To be spiritually minded is life and peace." (KJV)
Galatians 5:16 – "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (KJV)
II. The New Birth Gives Believers Supernatural Ability
Through salvation, believers receive a new nature.
Christ living within us enables us to overcome natural limitations.
Our emotions can be submitted to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Scriptures
2 Corinthians 5:17 – "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (KJV)
Philippians 4:13 – "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (KJV)
III. God's Solution Is Spiritual, Not Merely Human
Human psychology focuses primarily on the mind and emotions.
Scripture teaches that mankind's deepest needs are spiritual.
True transformation comes through God's power rather than human effort alone.
Scriptures
Zechariah 4:6 – "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." (KJV)
1 Corinthians 2:14 – "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God..." (KJV)
IV. God Created Humanity to Live in Dependence on Him
People were created in God's image for fellowship with Him.
Separation from God brought sin, corruption, and brokenness into the world.
Spiritual health is found in continual relationship and communion with God.
Scriptures
Genesis 1:27 – "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (KJV)
John 15:5 – "I am the vine, ye are the branches... for without me ye can do nothing." (KJV)
V. Christians Should Live by God's Supernatural Power
Believers are no longer limited to natural resources.
The Holy Spirit dwells within every born-again Christian.
Instead of merely coping with life's problems, believers are called to overcome through God's power.
Scriptures
Romans 8:11 – "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you... he shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you." (KJV)
Ephesians 3:20 – "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us." (KJV)
VI. Believers Should Expect a Higher Standard of Living
Christians should not measure themselves by the world's standards.
Because God lives within us, we can expect victory over emotions and circumstances.
Our lives should demonstrate the transforming power of the new birth.
Scriptures
Romans 12:2 – "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (KJV)
1 John 4:4 – "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." (KJV)
Summary
This lesson teaches that while emotional reactions are part of our human nature, born-again believers are not governed by natural limitations. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, Christians possess God's supernatural power to overcome emotional struggles, live in dependence upon Him, and experience victory that goes beyond what human wisdom or natural ability can accomplish. Believers are called to live according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh, demonstrating the transforming power of Christ in every area of life.
